How can I tell if I have sleep apnea and how can I treat it?

Diagnosis

The typical patient with sleep apnea is an overweight middle-aged male with a neck size of more than 17 inches. However, the condition is also common in women and not all sufferers are overweight. Almost everybody who has sleep apnea is a snorer, often a very heavy snorer. Pauses in breathing during sleep are commonly noticed by a bed partner but this history is often lacking and up to five "events" per hour are considered normal.
sleep apnea
One of the more consistent symptoms is "non restorative sleep" meaning that the patient wakes in the morning feeling unrefreshed no matter how much he slept during the night. Excessive daytime sleepiness is common in sleep apnea of any severity but some patients complain of fatigue rather than sleepiness. However, many patients with severe sleep apnea have no complaint of sleepiness or fatigue.
polysomnography
The most accurate diagnostic tool, polysomnography, can confirm the diagnosis and assist the doctor in identifying the type of sleep apnea present. In the past, this test was only done in hospitals and in specialized sleep laboratories. There are now portable sleep recording systems that can perform unattended polysomnography in the patient's home, but in-laboratory testing with a technician present remains the standard and is required by many insurers including Medicare before they will pay for treatment of sleep apnea.

Picture
With advances in portable electronics, patients can now use a small device called a pulse oximeter, which is attached to a fingertip to measure the oxygen saturation of the blood (percent of the total hemoglobin that is combined with oxygen). This non-intrusive monitor measures the difference in the color of the oxygenated and of the deoxygenated hemoglobin. Recordings of blood oxygen saturation during sleep may give an estimate of the severity of the problem although it's not been the most reliable screening tool.

Treatment

There are a variety of treatments for sleep apnea, depending on an individual’s medical history and the severity of the disorder. Most treatment regimens begin with lifestyle changes, such as avoiding alcohol and medications that relax the central nervous system (for example, sedatives and muscle relaxants), losing weight, and quitting smoking.
Some people are helped by special pillows or devices that keep them from sleeping on their backs. Some cases are treated with oral appliances to keep the airway open during sleep.
continuous postive airway pressure
If these conservative methods are inadequate, doctors often recommend continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). A face mask is attached to a tube and a machine that blows pressurized air into the mask and through the airway to keep it open. There are also surgical procedures that can be used to remove tissue and widen the airway. Some individuals may need a combination of therapies to successfully treat their sleep apnea.

In conclusion, untreated sleep apnea can be life threatening. Excessive daytime sleepiness can cause people to fall asleep at inappropriate times, such as while driving. Sleep apnea also appears to put individuals at risk for stroke and transient ischemic attacks (TIA, also known as “mini- strokes”), and is associated with coronary heart disease, heart failure, irregular heartbeat, heart attack, gout and high blood pressure.

Although there is no cure for sleep apnea, recent studies show that successful treatment can reduce the risk of heart and blood pressure problems.

alcohol and cancer
Research has shown that risks for cancer increase among men who have two alcoholic drinks a day and women who have one alcoholic drink per day.  While everyone has been widely aware of the fact that smoking cigarettes greatly increase your risk of contracting cancer, there has been very little publicity of the fact that alcohol can act as a similar carcinogen.

By its very nature and design, the consumption of alcohol damages cells in your body.  This damage can easily promote cell division, stimulate enzymes which cause the activation of other carcinogens and destroy certain nutrients that act as natural preventatives to cancer.

Most of the research indicates that a strong link exists between alcohol and cancers of the esophagus, pharynx and mouth.  There is a suggested, those less strongly proven, link between cancers of the liver, breast and colon.

According to the American Cancer Society, oral cancers are six times more common in alcohol users than in non alcohol users.
Common Cancer
Obviously, all of this evidence points to the conclusion that you should avoid alcohol so you can lower your chances of contracting these types of cancer.

For most people the question then comes down to a simple decision: are the benefits of drinking alcohol larger than the potential deficits of cancer?  As long as the mythology continues that there is no cure for cancer, the question should be fairly simple to answer.  Very few people would happily enjoy a few nights out with friends drinking for months or years of painful cancer.

Put plainly, our bodies are designed to heal themselves.  Our immune system was created to keep our bodies healthy.  However, like any other worker, our immune system cannot do its work if we don’t give it the necessary tools.

One of the effects of alcohol, which isn’t one of the reasons most folks drink it, is that it reduces the ability of your immune system to do its job.  So, people who regularly drink alcohol are regularly inhibiting the ability of their immune system to do its job.

immune system
Our cells are constantly dividing and there are a large number of ways the cell can become malignant.  In reality, we probably develop malignant cells on a daily basis.  However, once they become known to our immune system as a threat, they are destroyed.

It’s only when our immune system somehow misses the indications that a cell is becoming a problem that we term it cancer.

There is no dispute about the fact that doing anything which will inhibit our immune system increases our chances for becoming ill.  It’s significantly odd, then, that we all continue going about our lives while continually doing things that inhibit our immune systems.
Picture
In the end, we all need to evaluate the actions we take and the decisions we make with an eye towards the potential rewards versus the potential risks.  Alcohol diminishes the immune system and a diminished immune system greatly elevates our chances of developing cancer.  Next time you start to drink alcohol, stop and ask your immune system if it really wants to get drunk.

We hear everywhere what tattoos are for. Many years ago, they are mainly for spiritual reasons, to ward off evil spirits, to achieve certain powers, to heal a sickness, or to indicate status in a community. Now, they are mainly for self-expression and vanity, although some may still claim to have reasons similar to those of our ancestors, which makes tattoos a lot more interesting.
tattoo artist
We might think that the appearance and design of the tattoo is everything. Well, you might also want to consider that placement of the actual tattoo on your body counts a lot. Let’s say, a star tattoo, when placed on the ankle can come across as sweet and innocent. But when the same star tattoo is placed on the belly, it becomes sensual. And when it is placed on the arm, it portrays you as someone tough, no matter how innocent-looking your star tattoo is.
tattoo placement
However, for some people, the locations of the tattoos on their body, does not have to do with how it would be interpreted by the general public but by how their employers would react to it. Sometimes, tattoos have to be placed in areas where they could easily be concealed.

This applies to professionals whose careers require them to be tattoo-less or those who work in companies wherein visible tattoos are considered to be inappropriate.

For these people, facial tattoos on men are definitely a no-no. For women, it is acceptable if they are there for cosmetic reasons. But in these cases, it is the women that have lesser options for placement of tattoos since men can have a lot of them covered with their clothing. Women cannot have elaborate tattoos on their legs and arms unless they are in men’s suits. However, an inconspicuous tattoo of a tiny fairy or a symbol or a star tattoo would be considered interesting instead of inappropriate.

Tattoo designs
Also, since tattoos are permanent, you have to consider the changes your body would undergo as the years pass. A cute and sexy star tattoo on the belly may not look as good when you either lose or gain weight because, by then, it would be out of symmetry. When you think of a tattoo design, try to see in your mind’s eye how it would look like 10 or more years later on the part of your body you’re thinking of putting it on. The biceps, the back of the shoulder, and the lower back do not stretch nor shrink as much as the rest of our body does. Therefore, these areas would be perfect for tattoo placement; and they’d be easier to conceal.

So, when considering about getting a tattoo, it’s not just about the right size and design. Location matters. Consider what career you’re going to be getting into after college, or how it would look like when you’re old and wrinkly. You can’t just easily erase them when you find out later you put them in the wrong place. To save you a lot of trouble later, make sure you got everything covered.

dog collar
Collar

A typical dog trainer will not buy other training aids but would definitely subscribe to the use of collars. Dog collars come in various types with different functions, materials and appeal. As to the function the usual varieties include choke or chain collar, martingale collar, spoke collar, shock collar or electronic collar.

As to the material used to manufacture the dog collar the most famous are the leather collars, nylon collars, fabric collars and metal collars.

dog harness
Harness

A common alternative to dog leashes, the harness is a training device that is typically used in conjunction with or in replacement of dog collars. This distributes the force of pulling thus, preventing the possibilities of choking and could also prevent the chances of the dog slipping out when only a collar is used.

However, dog harnesses are not usually used for training ordinary house dogs instead harnesses are used for service dog training and assistance dog training.

dog leash
Leash or lead

This is usually made of leather or rope that is attached to the dog collar for better control or restraint. There are, however, some leashes that are looped around the neck of the dog that eliminate the use of a collar. There are several types of leash according to length- the very short, the short, the webbing leash and extended webbing leash.

The variations in sizes account for easier training depending on the distance wanted by the handler. For better control, tighter leashes are recommended while distance training is best accomplished using longer leashes.

dog muzzle
Muzzle

For dogs with unwanted biting and barking habits and need training to eliminate these behaviors, the dog muzzle is the most dependable type of dog equipment. This is also used for aggressive and dangerous dogs to prevent any damage that dogs could do using their mouths.

The muzzle is placed over the mouth of the dog to prevent it from opening its mouth. Dog muzzles could vary depending on the degree of freedom the device gives to the mouth, the construction material or the shape. It could be made of plastic, nylon, wire or leather.

dog bait pouch
Bait Pouch

It is a common practice among dog trainers to put dog treats inside their pockets, however it could sometimes be inconvenient. The main disadvantage of which is that some owners may take time in getting the needed reward, thus delaying the purpose of rewarding.

For better convenience, it is advisable for trainers to buy a bait pouch for training. This is an ordinary pouch that is made of canvass tied around the waist of the trainer for easier access to treats.

dog halter
Halter

This is a headgear and a variation of a collar that is used primarily for guiding, training and tying up an animal for easier control. It is worn over the muzzle of the dog and fits across the back of the head such that when the trainer pulls the head of the dog, it will follow the direction of pulling.

Dog training equipment has various purposes, constructions and names. One device can't simply accomplish all the works of different equipment. Thus, it is helpful for handlers to determine the exact use of the equipment first before buying one.

Cardiovascular disease, also known as CVD, is the number one killer of men and women of all ethnic groups in the United States.  Cardiovascular diseases include such ailments as high blood pressure, arrhythmia, valve disease, congestive heart failure and stroke.  Though worries of more "high profile" diseases such as breast cancer are on the forefront in many women's minds, the hard truth is that one in four women is affected with some form of cardiovascular disease.

Picture
Risk factors for cardiovascular diseases are:

High blood pressure, obesity, abnormal blood glucose, and even the use of tobacco, among other factors.  When caught at an early age, these risk factors can be muted to help prevent manifesting themselves as cardiovascular disease later on.

Altering your lifestyle can help to lower your chances for cardiovascular diseases.  Such alterations as eating a diet that is low in fat and cholesterol, adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet, drinking enough water daily, and exercising for half an hour a day are all ways that physicians suggest can assist in lowering your chances for cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular diseases are known as silent killers, as they often have no symptoms.  If you think you may be having any symptoms of heart disease, you should speak to your doctor about the many tests available.  Doctors often begin with simple tests, the results of which can lead to tests that are more complex.
atrial fibrillation
In connection with cardiovascular disease are "extra" heartbeats, which typically happen when there is an irritation in the lower part of the heart's pumping chambers.  They interrupt the normal heart rhythm, which can feel like a missed beat.  This can actually be a harmless "quirk" of your body's functions, or can lead to problems that are far more serious.

patient and doctor
If a woman has these palpitations or any other symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, or shortness of breath, she should contact her doctor right away.  A complete medical history, physical exam, and other tests will be run to determine the cause of these behaviors, which can be anything from stress-related behavior to something far more dangerous.  The advice and consultation of a physician where heart disease is concerned is the only way to go.

Insulin
Diabetes is a condition featuring unusually high levels of glucose in the bloodstream.  Insulin, produced by the pancreas, is used by the body to lower blood glucose levels.  If someone’s pancreas doesn’t generate enough insulin, their body will develop diabetes.

A short list of symptoms of diabetes would include severe hunger and thirst, more urge to urinate, and fatigue.  But the surest way of knowing whether you have diabetes is having a blood sugar test, also known as a Glucose Tolerance Test.

Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is the more acute form. It is typically treated with special dietary restrictions, exercise and occasionally with insulin. Type 1 diabetes usually will be treated with special diet, exercise, and a weight loss plan before insulin is added.  This form of diabetes is considered an insulin dependent disease.

Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is a less severe form of diabetes. It is first treated with a diabetic diet, exercise and weight loss.  If these measures are not successful in controlling blood sugar and insulin levels, oral medications may be added.  Insulin is then finally considered if these also are unsuccessful.  Type 2 diabetes normally occurs in adults who are middle age or older, which is why it is sometimes called Late-Onset Diabetes. In this case, the pancreas still produces the right levels of insulin but the body has become resistant to it.

It is feasible to delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes if it runs in the family. Through losing weight, getting the right amount of exercise and controlling your diet, you can manage.  If Type 2 diabetes is not treated, eventually the same complications may ensue as those seen with Type 1 diabetes.

Gestational Diabetes
Gestational diabetes is seen in pregnant women. Normally it disappears after the birth of the baby, however, treatment for the mother to stabilize the blood glucose levels will decrease the chance of complications to the baby as well as mother.

Juvenile Onset diabetes is another major form of diabetes that affects many children.  It is believed to be the onset of Type 1 diabetes.  If a child is showing even a few of the symptoms of diabetes, it’s vital that they be checked by a doctor.  It is estimated that over two million adolescents are in the pre-diabetes stage. This is mostly due to being overweight. In this condition, blood glucose levels are high but not high enough to be considered diabetes.  Teens usually develop this between the ages of 12 and 19.

Picture
Diabetics often have unique personalities. They tend to be part of the most creative section of the population. They think in terms of wholeness rather than in details, which means they often love to start a project but have a hard time finishing it. Their creativity also can express in ways that others might call disorganized. The Ugly Duckling story portrays the hidden life of the diabetic, and they often don’t have enough self-respect or self-esteem because they feel they are different.

Living as a diabetic, or living with one, means acknowledging that there is a major difference in how the wholeness of the personality functions. Reinforce the positives and learn to live with a little disorder. Respect the body’s intelligence that knows when it needs to rest. The non-diabetic hasn’t always learned this beautiful lesson on how to make the most of a human life.

Have you ever wondered what foods should you feed your Kid to promote health and weight management?

Here is a list of the top 7 healthiest foods to feed your kid and why it’s so healthy:

1. Oatmeal: A fabulous breakfast food, full of vitamin B, iron, zinc and calcium. Old-fashioned oatmeal offers plenty of carbohydrate for quick energy and high fiber.  Add berries and honey to make it a delicious perfect food for those fast-paced school day morning.

Picture
2.Yogurt: Kick your child's dairy consumption up a notch and include yogurt on the menu. A great source of calcium, yogurt is easier to digest than regular milk, and the cultures (check the label to make sure they're in there!) are very beneficial to good colon health. Watch it on the sugar content though.  A great idea is to buy plain yogurt and sweeten it yourself with fresh fruit.

Picture
3. Broccoli: it is one of the best vegetables for anyone, especially growing kids.  It has loads of calcium, potassium, beta-carotene and a wide variety of the vitamin B.  If your child is not a fan of plain vegetables include broccoli in a casserole or put a little shredded cheese on top to add flavor.

Picture
4. Protein: One size does not fit all when it comes to protein. The fact is that growing kids need protein to keep growing. How you're going to give it to them can vary widely, according to your preferences. Good choices include legumes, beans (combined with a grain to make a complete protein), soy products like tofu, eggs or lean meat, fish or poultry.

Picture
5. Whole Grains: The best nutrition is found in whole grains. Brown rice and whole wheat bread are a quantum leap over their white counterparts and offer necessary fiber, minerals and vitamins.  Choose grain products with the words “whole”, “unbleached” and “intact” or “ground”.

Picture
6. Nut Butters: Peanut butter and other nut butters are great fast and easy foods for kids. Kids need fat (it's a good fat if it doesn't have hydrogenated oils mixed in it) and they need the protein.  Try spreading almond or sunflower seed butter on crackers, toast or celery sticks for a quick and nutritious snack.

Picture
7. Fresh Fruit: My personal choice would be cantaloupe in the melon department. Vitamin C, beta-carotene, bits and pieces of vitamin B and trace minerals and calcium fill every juicy bite. Any in season fresh fruit is sure to be packed with healthy goodness.
